A Passion for Service

On November 6, 1993, Lambda Chi Alpha began an international philanthropy project that has raised more than 23 million pounds of food for the needy across North America. Called the North American Food Drive, this annual event has arguably become the largest single-day philanthropic project sponsored by a collegiate organization. Last year Lambda Chi Alpha began a new partnership with Feeding America and over 8000 members contributed in raising 1.5 million pounds to donate. Since 1993 our chapter has raised more than 70 thousand pounds. Lambda Chi Alpha at Mercer University runs two events to raise canned food for the Middle Georgia Food Bank; Watermelon Bust and Bag Drop. If you wish to donate money or canned goods, email the Philanthropy Chair, Caleb Jones, at [email protected].

Watermelon Bust

Bag Drop

Watermelon Bust is an large scale philanthropic event based around games that contain watermelons. There are different things each year such as relay races, watermelon toss, watermelon eating contest, watermelon painting, and much more! Teams of five girls from different sororities on campus compete against each other to gain points by winning the different games. The team with the highest total at the end of the event wins and gets prizes from all types of stores that were generous enough to donate items to us for the event.

Bag drop is one of the core philanthropic events for our chapter. It allows us to bring in thousands of pounds of food in a short period of time, due to the generosity of the Macon community. Bag drop is where all of the active brothers of the chapter are divided equally into different teams. Each team has an area containing a few neighborhoods that they are responsible for the duration of Bag Drop. The team goes out on a Friday, dropping bags with letters requesting donations of canned food or money in the designated area, leaving them for the weekend. On Sunday, each team drives through its area, collecting the bags of canned food or money. The food will then be auctioned off for more money or donated to the Middle Georgia Food Bank to feed the hungry!
